future friendly… responsive web design. everything changed after the iphone… smartphonesbecame ubiquitous in our culture and transformed the way in which we send and receive information. the old methods of serving a web page no longerapplied. fixed widths and heights on a small screen looked bad and were almost un-usableby the consumer. as a result, if you wanted to serve contenton a phone, you were forced to choose between writing a device specific app or writing aseparate mobile (.m) version of the web site. in both cases you were forced to maintainingtwo, or more, separate code bases for the same business application.
things got even worse once the ipad was introduced.now companies where potentially responsible for even more code in order to maximize theexperience on the new device. if you start to include gaming consoles, and smart tv’sthe problem only gets bigger. thankfully, the web offered a solution. injune of 2012, media queries was standardized and included in the css3 specification. thistechnology allowed developers to determine screen size, resolution, and orientation ofany given device providing developers the ability to change the way information is presentedto the consumer. as a result, you could now have one code basethat works on all devices as well as one source of content to maintain regardless of the platform.no need for a platform app or mobile site.
