what we've created here at theuniversity of michigan is something we call sirius essentially what is a replica of sirias well as microsoft cortana and google's googlenow, what we call intelligent personal assistants. in a lotof ways what we've created here with sirius is like what linux is to windows right so withwindows when you have a computer and youhave windows on it we traditionally don't have access and wecurrently don't have access to
change windows into being whatever wewant it to be with linux you have your own open source operating system that can customize tobe whatever you want and so what we try to do with sirius isto provide and open source a common infrastructurethat anyone can customize and deploy and and have freedom to do whatever they like but have astarting point that is as intelligent as what you wouldfind in these proprietary environments one thing that we've done with this iswe've created
and intelligent personal assistant thatyou can ask questions to things that you would expectwikipedia to know. when was this built? another use case could potentially be astartup who would like to provide new types ofservices that look like and intelligent personal assistant thereare several a components for the system one component is thespeech recognition component which basically translate natural speech into text. the next step is toactually interpret the texts extract the symmetrixmeaning of the text
so we could actually conduct a search inthe wikipedia database and extract answers from wikipediathere's a one significant way that where different in terms of features isto provide this image capability where we can use images aswell as our speech to interact with it and that pushes thestate-of-the-art so if you have a smartphone or if youhave an image capturing wearable on you can simply capturethe image of of something you're looking at in yourenvironment and ask a question about now we can build much faster than couldbe done
when only industry companies thatare contributing to it all of the universities of theworld all the startup so the world cancontribute to this open platform and we have the resources allof the ideas that can come together and come into this one centralinfrastructure so in many ways we may be able to do moreimpressive and amazing things than we've seen from the companiesthemselves who's had a monopoly on this infrastructure some people ask whether speech officialdriven set of car is actually interacting with the
computer whether it's just the hype or its going to be the next big thing andpeople will really adopted this but i i truly believed that that's going tobe the natural trend because if you think about computing at first we had a keyboard right? we didn'teven have a mouse before and that was very not natural in terms of how youactually communicate i think in the future we will actuallycommunicate with the computers more like how we communicate
with human that you can justask maybe ambiguous questions and the computers gonna be able to interpretwhat you're really asking and try to actually ask back and i think sirius has really helped us toreally look at this question as you know how do we reallyactually interact with computers how to actually make a more natural way of doing this i think that's definitely the future we're going towards cubic centimeter scale has been reported we're looking at cubicmillimeter scale which is
10 cubed or one thousand times smallerthan that
