graphic design and web development jobs
i am here with bejan from artisan talent.tell me about how to be a freelancer? well, there are many ways to be a freelancer.i mean obviously initially is you may quit your job or you just can't find a permanentjob and you are looking out there to try to find work on your own. it's not an easy process.you do have to go out. you can go online. you can go register with some internet-basedcompanies or crowd sourcing type of places. you can go search on google and it can bea very tedious process and so it's not an easy thing to do but if you have that mentalityand you're willing to just throw yourself out there and try to wait for the next jobto come to you, i think it can be an exciting way to do things but it's not an easy wayto go.
why do you think people actually do choosethe freelance life as oppose to say trying to get something 9 to 5?i think now more so than ever people are realizing that they can have more of a life balanceout there and if you can't balance the two and if you actually do have the talent. alot of people think they have the talent and they go try and they find that it is verydifficult. it's hard because once you're out there and you have your own job or you havea freelance job and you are working on something, it's very difficult to go on find the nextposition. right because you are working so how do youmark at yourself for the next job while you are busy?exactly and that's what is very difficult
and the other thing that bogs down designersor freelancers is actually the marketing and the business side effects. so you really don'thave time to send an invoice to do collections, to worry about taxes, to worry about benefits.and then you start to not giving enough jobs and it's difficult to make a living.so one of the difficult aspects of how to be a freelancer is all of that kind of leftbrain stuff invoicing 1099, (right) w-2, i don't even known the names of all of the stuff.i'm sure i'm getting it round. well let's just go backwards for a second though. whatare some of the different freelancer disciplines? how to be a graphic designer or (sure) whatare some of the different pieces? well that's really expanded. it used to beback in let's say 20 years ago freelancers
were graphic designers, art directors andwriters and it's really expanded. of course with the digital media out there right nowthere are so many roles that have come up so there are many roles that we are now lookingat that really didn't exist even three years ago 4 years ago even six months ago we'rehearing some different roles and those can be usability experienced people, informationarchitects, web designers, developers, info-graphics so really it really has expanded.and you have mentioned it to me that i hadn't really even heard of seo's specialist, socialmedia marketing. (yes) there are some amazing sorts of perfectionists just bringing outof this sort of new digital age. (absolutely, yes right) cool now you have mentioned thatsome of the pieces of how to be a freelancer
quite difficult eye, the left brain businesspieces and the biggest challenge finding work we do of course have a short cupper all ofthis. one thing (there is) that you could do is to list with a talent agency like artisan.how does an agency like artisan kind of makes all of that pain go away?well we do tend to believe and we really feel that we are talent so we are really thereto try and help talent throughout their career. it's not just their first job, it's not justlooking at their resume but when we do have someone come in we do a personal interview.we look at their strengths and weaknesses and we are really there to find them workthat they would not normally come across because we do have some great relationships with clientsthroughout the industry. it could be fortune
one hundred companies to bury boutique designfirms. so, we have access to jobs that the freelancer on their own wouldn't have.cool so you can kind of arguably take the pain away; get the gig for me if i'm interestedin being a freelancer. (right) deal with some of that left brain stuff so i don't have toworry about it and market me for my next job while i'm doing this one. is this like a goodsummary or am i totally one sided? no, no! we really try to take all of thatthose difficult things to do that the graphic designer or digital marketing person doesn'treally have time to do or actually just doesn't want to do. so really we can become theirmarketing arm so we will do the cold calling. we will do the marketing. we will do the seo.we will again we have good relationship with
clients that we can present our talent toand so there are clients out there now that really just will work with an agency. theyreally don't want to work with a freelance talent (right) directly because it becomesa headache for them. yeah like like if you don't know how to doonly admin then you become that pain in the ass, high maintenance. exactly, alright good.so let's say i'm out there. i want to be a freelancer. (yeah) i have watched this video.what's my first step if i want to get in touch with artisan?well the first step would be you can go to our website. you can register with us. youcan actually go the old school way. you can certainly call us. we are more than willingto talk to you. (i'm shocked) amazing and
of course there are the social media channelsthat you can twitter, facebook, linkedin so we are out there. you can really find us quiteeasily. okay cool and what's my sequence here like?let's say i get in touch with you (yeah) i mean you have people for months, years, decades.can i kind of find a home with you? do i have to go anywhere else? what is that look like?ah! you really can. if you are type of talent that our client is looking for, it can beyour first job. it could be your best job that you've been thinking of. we actuallyfollow people throughout their career. so it's not somebody, it can be someone thathas come in and we have had freelancers that are actually been with us three, four, sixyears and we have others that have come with
us. they have worked with us for a coupleof years. they found a full-time job and then they become a client or vice versa they leavetheir job and they have become a freelancer again and if they're talented we know thatwe can get them work right away. okay cool and finally you guys are officein chicago as we speak. yes you guys are kind of everywhere (right) so you know i can workfor you remotely directly in cities across the country. is there anywhere in north americathat you want? ah! no, i would say we are in the major citiesbut that we do have clients that are based elsewhere but i would say generally speakingwe are in the major metropolitan areas. alright cool thanks i appreciate your advice. surethank you. i'm going to learn how to be a
freelancer. (okay) i'm in. i'm doing it.
