with a great showcase, solid features anda valuable analytics tools to help me understand how people are using my app.for the purposes of this little project i'm looking for something free -- so i watchedthe demo, which was good but a little techy for a non-coder like me -- clicked downloadtitanium. after the download, i opened the titaniumprogram -- went through some of the updates they wanted me to make -- realized that ihad even more software updates to make and things to download... so i figured out whati needed to download and let that run in the background. this is already getting a little too techyfor me. appcelerator wants you to use javascript
to build your app, which is probably simpleenough for a programmer -- but for me as a marketing guy i'm looking for something moresimple than this. while i waited for the download, i paid avisit to mit app inventor and clicked "invent" they allowed me to use one of my social accountsto login -- i named my app -- and was able to start exploring their drag and drop app-buildingfeatures. mit app inventor was a little more user friendlyfor me as a marketer. they had help icons next to each feature. the user experiencefeel a little like i'm using a cms from the early 2000's but i'll get over it. i was impressedwith a few of the features that allow your app to utilize/integrate with some of thefunctions on your phone like finding your
location, accessing your contacts or recordinga video. there's definitely some room for creativity. when i wanted to preview my app -- i trieddownloading it to my desktop. i had a little trouble actually seeing a live preview ofmy app. the download was a .apk file... which i had never heard of before. a quick googlesearch told me that i needed to download this 400mb program to open a .apk file... so idid that. even after i downloaded the program i wasn't able to open the file.at the end of the day, i'm sure mit app inventor works... but it was created for someone smarterthan i am... i never got to build an app. i got to frustrated and quit.
mit app inventor feels like an old-school cms. generally functionsfine. can be basic things. i can have images and buttons and titles. i can have generalaesthetic pieces that you would have on any website. there were a few features that allowyour app to utilize/integrate with some of the functions on your phone like finding yourlocation, accessing your contacts, recording video, i had a lot of trouble downloading the appto my desktop or previewing the app on my phone. they have what seems to be a simple"package for phone" button but i ended up having to download additional apps just toopen the .apk file (wtf is a .apk file?).

that i wanted to share on the app. i found some very useful integrations forsmall businesses like opentable, rss feeds, music and photos. plenty of room for creativityand custom design. when i was ready to preview my app, i simplysent a text message to my phone and opened a preview in my browser.the final steps of the process were just as easy. i was able to include a descriptionand other basic info about the app for publishing in the app store. best of all -- i can publishthe app for free! the moral of the story is -- check out infinitemonkeys -- it's the best mobile app builder for non-techy people. the website is monk.eetell the monkeys that harrison lloyd sent
